State series #1 at Little Forest

4 Apr 2017 by Don Cherry

Nillumbik Emus hosted the first of the state series at Little Forest near Ballan on Sunday, with courses set by Rex Niven. A good sized crowd turned out with 176 officially running on the day. That was achieved with the knowledge that there were several families unable to attend! There were many EODs from the initial pre-entries of 141. The setting was from the edge of farmland into the unique terrain of this area where the forested hills tend to be flat topped with steep gradients into narrow gullies dotted with impressive rocky outcrops. There were places where this opened out a little, however thick regrowth and areas of fallen limbs impeded clean running. The day seemed to get colder as it went with a little light rain and stiff cool breeze near the close.
Bendigo was represented by 22 club members, which trailed behind BKV (28), however other large clubs fielded similar numbers – DROC (20), NEV (20), Yarra (20) Eureka (17) and MFR (17). Six members finished on the podium with Lachlan F (M7), Luke (M8), Kerryn (W4) and Serryn(W6) gaining first places and Joshua (2nd in M9) and Caitlyn (3rd in W4). Congratulations.
MFR finished best of the clubs with 10 in top three places across the courses (7 of those from 2 families!).
Coming up this week end – BBC2 Royal George at West Bendigo and the VicBushO at Macedon;
Following that – best wishes for our team going to NZ for Easter, and then events at Mandurang, Kooyoora, One Tree Hill and Upper Crusoe over the next few weeks.
Next State event is the Sprint double hosted by DROC in the Yarra valley on 21/5/17.
