SS4 Fryerstown

26 Jun 2017 by Don Cherry

Yarra Valley Orienteers hosted the 4th instalment of the State Series at Spring Gully near Fryerstown on Sunday. The weather forecast was for possible showers and cold temperatures, and it was close! Many reported driving through rain to get to the event, and being anxious about how the day may turn out. Fortunately the rain held off, with only a couple of light showers blowing through later in the day. Back in the morning, the day had started with bright blue sky, but the cloud rolled in, so by lunch is was quite cold with all present looking for beanies and jackets.
About 150 competed with a good spread of competitors across all clubs – even with many overseas at the present attending preparation training for WOC and JWOC. Bendigo had 25 starters, just behind Bayside’s 27 and ahead of Yarra’s 22.
Yarra had warned us they would be long courses and they delivered (great courses, thanks Hania!). C1 attracted 15 for the 10.5km race being won by Todd followed by Bruce (both MFR). The next three places taken by Bendigo members Richard, Ben and David.
W2 saw Lanita (DRV) triumph over Nicola (MFR) and Clare (BGV), however the splits show that the lead changed 9 times between 4 different runners. M2 was similar with lead changes 5 times before Dion (MFR) cruised away in the last half to win by 4.30 minutes over Martin (DRV) and Tim (BKV). Best placed Bendigo member was Michael in 5th spot, 12 minutes off the pace.
W3 was a smaller field dominated by Jenny from the start finishing outright winner over Carolyn (BKV) and Janine(DRV). M3 was won by Shayne (BGV), with David (BKV) and Warwick (TKV) making the top three.
W4 was convincingly won by Serryn (BGV) after Sue (MKR) made an error midway and Prue (BKV) filled third spot. M4 was taken by Paul(TKV) in the closest margin of the day of 2 seconds over Tavish (BGV) who was returning after a long break from orienteering. Tim (YVV) took third.
Alison (BGV) won W5 well clear with a 16.51 minute win over Laurie(NEV) and Anne(BKV), while Cormac (YVV) was untroubled to lead from the start winning M5 in front of Peter(DRV) and Peter(TKV). Daryl was best placed Bendigo member in 5th. W6 was won by Dale Ann (EUV) followed by Kathryn (YVV) and Helen(BKV) while the M6 had just one competitor, Callum (YVV) completing the course in 50 minutes. After a rocky start with lots of errors in W7, Heather (YVV) finished on top ahead of consistent Sophie (CHV) and early leader Elizabeth(BKV). M7 with 2 competitors was lead by Peter (TKV) until the midway point before Eleanor (BGV) finished strongly after a series of early errors.
In W8 Sophie (MFR) was untroubled from the start winning over Belinda (YVV) by 27 minutes. Ashley took the win for M8 in 36 minutes, being the only competitor he was not challenged. While W9 had 3 runners, won by Ella (YVV) in front of Clementine (BGV?) and Hannah (BKV). Evan (BKV) was the only one in M9 finishing in 34 minutes.
Next state event at Chewton in 2 weeks. It is close and the terrain should be familiar to most Bendigo orienteers, so we should be able to provide many more competitors. See you there.
